Start with 1 fan. Then 10. Then 100.
The primary goal of networking: meet awesome people regularly and keep in touch.
“Fans” are people who know you by name, what you are building. The are ready to support you.
It’s hard to find such people and it takes long time.
But these few people will get you broader audience.
Learn to make friends with great people regularly.
How to win friends / fans
- vibe together; if you don’t, you won’t be friends — find someone else
- share value for free: help with something, support launches
- have lots of chats: public comments and private DMs + calls
- be around for a long time (at least 1 month)
People follow resourceful people
They will follow you when you:
- create something interesting
- overcome the challenges
- share your knowledge
- different from others
People avoid salesy people
Don’t expect quick wins, you won’t sell anything until you gain trust
- When you plug your link when commenting, make sure that your comment is valuable by itself without a link
- Don’t plug links right away in stranger comments, first engage with them couple times so they know you
- Promote through building. Plug links naturally under your progress updates and case studies
People like builders
Your product is your challenge, your lovely thing that you’re growing genuinely.
Present your product through case studies — how it solves problems? for whom?
Get used to write public updates in Twitter instead of Slack.
Learn to be radically transparent about your personality and issues/wins in your company
Once you learn to be yourself people will value your authenticity. It sound cliche but let’s talk after you share your vulnerability.
